CALEXICO RELEASE “VOICES IN THE FIELD” LYRIC VIDEO + NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES

November 29, 2017

Today Calexico released the lyric video for “Voices in the Field”, the latest off their forthcoming album The Thread That Keeps Us (out January 26th on ANTI- and City Slang). Frontman Joey Burns says: “In the age of the extremes when walls attempt to stifle words, this song is inspired by the poems on postcards from those uprooted by war and oppression. It’s a song to remind us to open up our hearts and hear other voices sing their stories.” Known for their genre bending catalogue and masterful live performances, the band also announced US tour dates including stops in New York, Nashville, DC, Chicago and more.

The Thread That Keeps Us is the band’s ninth studio album and the followup to 2015’s critically acclaimed Edge of the Sun.  Largely inspired by Burns’ wanderings around Northern California during the album’s production, the narratives embedded in The Thread That Keeps Us reflect on displacement, transitory existence, and—in his own words—“returning to your home after being gone for some time and seeing how things have changed, and maybe not in the best way.” Working with their longtime engineer Craig Schumacher, Calexico co-produced The Thread That Keeps Us, gathering musicians from across the globe to dream up an earthy yet expansive sound spiked with jagged guitar tones and flashes of distortion.
The band previously released album track  End of the World with You,  and Stereogum said that “breezy instrumentation surrounds the implicit political commentary, yearning for an escape from the chaos to ‘the start of the end of the world.’” Paste noted on the textural contrast, remarking that “the uplifting melody is intermittently pierced by wailing guitars, juxtaposing light and dark instrumentally.”
