Bruce Hornsby On NPR’s All Things Considered – New Album Solo Concerts Out On August 25th Fall Tour Dates Begin In September
August 22, 2014
August 21, 2014 – Acclaimed singer-songwriter and pianist, Bruce Hornsby will be featured on NPR’s All Things Considered this weekend to talk about his new album Solo Concerts – alive two-disc set available on August 25th. Visit http://www.npr.org/programs/all-things-considered/ for local station listings.
Solo Concerts, his first release for Vanguard Records, features 21 tracks culled from solo concerts performed by Hornsby in the U.S. over 2012 and 2013. Solo Concerts offers an opportunity for Hornsby to show off virtuosic piano playing in a variety of settings. There are solo renditions of his radio hits, songs like “Mandolin Rain” and “The Valley Road” as well as forays into the kind of old-timey music he performed at the start of his career – playing accordion in a band that featured fiddles, banjos and dulcimers. Hornsby also explores modern classical music with the dissonance and expressive chromatics of 20th century 12-tone experimental composers like Austrians Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern, as well as American modernists like Elliot Carter, the Hungarian György Ligeti or the French mystic Olivier Messiaen. Hornsby’s masterful hands brings together this disparate “information” from musical languages often thought to be opposed in what he calls an “unholy alliance.” “I think I’ve found a middle ground,” Hornsby says, “where you’re reaching and broadening your language but still connecting with someone perhaps used to hearing — for an entire lifetime — only those seven white notes and those simple chords.” Fans can pre-order Solo Concerts from Amazon, iTunes, and the Vanguard Records store.
Hornsby just wrapped a summer tour with Pat Metheny and will return to the stage this fall with solo performances highlighted by stops at Boston’s Wilbur Theatre on September 24th and New York’s Rose Theatre on September 26th. Each ticket to his solo performances will include a copy Solo Concerts which will be available for pick-up at each show. Below is the current list of dates with more to be added.
