Alabama Shakes Kick Off Fall Tour Tonight In Nashville

September 27, 2012

Alabama Shakes will launch their fall North American headline tour tonight at Nashville’s Public Square Park with a free show that is part of the “Live On The Green” concert series. The run will include sold-out dates at New York City’s Terminal 5 (10/4), Boston’s House of Blues (10/5) and the Riviera Theatre in Chicago (12/1) plus a visit to the sold-out Austin City Limits Festival (10/12). See below for itinerary.

“I Ain’t The Same,” Alabama Shakes’ new video, world premieres today on the VEVO homepage, where it can be seen through Sunday, September 30th. The clip, directed by Jane Pollard (Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds), is the second in a series of videos showcasing the band’s powerful live performances. It was filmed in London at KONK Studios, which is owned by Ray Davies and The Kinks.

“[The] band’s music reached ecstatic, rafter-shaking heights. Singer Brittany Howard has the bearing, power and charisma of a star twice her age,” said NPR Music of Alabama Shakes’ set at the Newport Folk Festival 2012 while The New York Times’ Jon Pareles praised the group’s Bonnaroo appearance as “fervent, rip-roaring rock and roll.”

Alabama Shakes will perform at the ninth annual Black Ball on November 1st at New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom, sharing the stage with Beyoncé, Carole King, Angélique Kidjo, Keep a Child Alive co-founder and event host, Alicia Keys, and emcee Whoopi Goldberg. The Black Ball, which honors Oprah Winfrey and Angélique Kidjo this year, is a special benefit event raising hopes, dreams and millions of dollars to help children and families affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India.

The band was highlighted in a recent article in The New York Times on six artists that are making their “Austin City Limits” debut in the groundbreaking series’ upcoming season. While the airdate for the episode featuring Alabama Shakes’ set has not yet been announced, fans can see the band perform a song in “ACL Presents: Americana Music Festival 2012,” airing on PBS on November 10th as part of the show’s 38th season. Alabama Shakes were named Emerging Artist of the Year at the Americana Music Association’s Honors and Awards ceremony. The group also picked up the award for Best New Artist of the Year at the Triple A radio conference and is nominated for a Q award for Best New Act.

Boys & Girls (ATO Records), Alabama Shakes’ debut album, was tipped as one of the best albums of 2012 by Rolling Stone and NPR Music in their midyear round-ups. It debuted at No. 1 on the Independent Label chart and spent 15 consecutive weeks in the top 50 of the Billboard 200. Boys & Girls has sold more than 300,000 units in North America since April and is certified Gold in the U.K., where it was released by Rough Trade. USA Today named Alabama Shakes “the country’s hottest emerging band” while vocalist/guitarist Brittany Howard made Essence Magazine’s “Next” list and came in at #1 on Paste’s list of the 10 Best New Voices in Music.

“Hold On,” the album’s first single, topped the Triple A radio chart and was a Top 15 hit at the Modern Rock format. The accompanying video has nearly three million views. The follow-up single, “I Ain’t The Same,” is currently in the Top 20 at Triple A radio.

Alabama Shakes – comprising vocalist/guitarist Brittany Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, drummer Steve Johnson, and bassist Zac Cockrell – are based in Athens, AL. You can see the band performing “I Ain’t The Same” and “Rise To The Sun” on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” at:
