New York, NY (February 27, 2019) – Art rock duo In The Valley Below has announced their sophomore full-length album and its motion picture companion, The Pink Chateau, will be arriving April 26 on Bright Antenna – sharing their new Dave Sitek (TV on the Radio) produced single, Rise today, along with a trailer from the film via YouTube.

Angela Gail
and Jeffrey Jacob will take the sonic + visual experience out on the road in April. Broadcast over headphones, guests will experience a fully immersive audio and visual experience as the band performs the album/score live in theaters in front of the movie at Alamo Drafthouses across the U.S. Starting April 9 in New York City thru April 23 in San Francisco before a series of special West Coast screenings & performances around the album release. You can currently find In The Valley Below on the road supporting Albert Hammond Jr. on the West Coast thru March 8 in Los Angeles (all dates below).

The Pink Chateau film is the story of a young woman who follows a beautiful stranger into the countryside. What unfolds is a series of sensual and intimate tales in the form of a silent film set to In The Valley Below’s new album. The film was written and co-directed by Angela, and filmed in and around a palatial estate in rural Michigan. A dreamlike diorama of interconnected musical vignettes inspired by vintage French erotica and the faded colors of 1970s films, each song on the record serves as a portal through which the film’s enigmatic female protagonist confronts her most deep-seated desires. “It’s a story of sexual discovery and freedom from taboo,” Angela explains. “It’s a fantasy of an inviting place where female sexuality is a beautiful curiosity and not a shameful secret. Free from the story of the woman being a slut or victim if she is sexual.”

The idea to make a film for the album came from novelist/film director and head of Bright Antenna, Tiffanie Debartolo, who gave Angela the full freedom and confidence to write and direct the film. Angela adds, “I had previously directed music videos, but the logistics of organizing a feature film shoot were new to me. I brought on a filmmaker friend and colleague, Marcos Efron, to team up with and help me take this from vision to reality. It was also important for us to be inclusive with our cast and crew. We made every effort to include women, persons of color, and LGBTQ. I feel a diverse group brings a much richer atmosphere on set and on screen.”

For In The Valley Below hardship and passion are two sides of the same coin, and romance is the only defense against a world gone mad.  Almost giving up on a music career when Angela found out she was pregnant, they emerged in 2014 with a hit single, “Peaches” off their debut album The Belt. Angela and Jeffrey were swept up quickly into an unexpected whirlwind… a record deal with Capitol Records, invitations to perform on Letterman and Conan, remixes by Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke and Passion Pit, tours with White Lies and the Cold War Kids, and festival dates from Austin City Limits to Reading & Leeds.  After living on the road for several years, with child, bags were packed in LA and shipped to Grand Rapids, where a house was bought and a basement studio created.

Holing up last winter in their home studio, the resultant album, The Pink Chateau puts lie to our preconceived notions of how environment influences music. There’s a tendency to conflate an artist’s sound with their surrounding geography—be it the sun-dappled serenity of ‘70s Laurel Canyon folk-rock or the industrial pallor of Manchester post-punk. But The Pink Chateau is proof you can make sexy, urbane, tropical pop music in a Michigan basement in the dead of winter. When the duo invite you to “drink champagne in the pink chateau” on the album’s seductively funky title track, the message is clear: paradise is wherever you want it to be.
