A STUNNING, PERSONAL INTRODUCTION ABOUT COMPLICATED TEENAGE RELATIONSHIPS

“Melton’s vocals invoke the cool Americana of Neko Case”
FLOOD

September 15, 2023 – Today Tish Melton, 17 year old singer-songwriter, releases her debut single “Michelle,” a gorgeous, introspective introduction to Melton’s precise songwriting and emotional clarity about the complex relationships that define teenagehood. “Michelle” was produced by Brandi Carlile, Melton’s musical mentor and friend, and is accompanied by a music video directed by Jacq Justice, out today via CMDSHFT. Watch and listen to “Michelle” here

FLOOD premiered the track this morning, stating, “The way she narrates what has colloquially become known as a ‘friendship breakup’ feels unique to a coming-of-age perspective.” FLOOD continued, saying the track “matches the intensity of recalling one’s first heartbreak while the instrumental and Melton’s vocals invoke the cool Americana of Neko Case.”

“Michelle” is diaristic folk rock at its very best. Precise and piercing, Melton’s lyrics perfectly capture the unpredictable currents of young relationships and friendships: “all she needed was lazy sunday mornings / but I thought she’d think that I was boring, conforming/ so I brought her saturday night Melton sings, about the sobering reality of unreciprocated commitment/friendship.

With careful layers of shuffled percussion and a swirling array of guitar, banjo and instrumentals, Tish’s layered vocals are perfectly accentuated. Though her writing is centered from a teenage perspective, her clear-eyed understanding of vulnerability and relationships is for everyone.

“’Michelle’ is simple, universal and one of my favorite songs I’ve written,” says Tish. “You care for someone so much while knowing it’s not their job to reciprocate it.” She continues, “I wrote ‘Michelle’ in my bedroom, but it didn’t really come to life until Brandi and I got into the studio together. Learning from Brandi has changed the way I think about my music. She’s a mentor and a friend.”

Brandi Carlile says of Tish Melton, “Tish is so young and so brilliant. Like most lessons in life, I learned this one while I thought I was teaching it. We should guide youth in music but there’s no question that it should lead. My favorite thing was excitedly trying to explain that all the ‘new sounds’ Tish was into were actually the sounds of my city (Seattle) when I was exactly her age. A wonderful artist can plug you back into past parts of yourself you maybe should’ve stayed connected to?”

Tish Melton might be recognizable to some, featured in her mother Glennon Doyle’s book Untamed in a memorable moment and lesson about sensitivity as strength. As the daughter of Glennon Doyle and Abby Wambach and father Craig, Melton has the unique perspective of being raised by two formidable mothers, and having a thriving and creative network of gifted storytellers.

Brandi and Tish’s first recorded collaboration was in writing the theme song for her mothers’ podcast We Can Do Hard Things. Tish has previously joined Brandi onstage at Mothership Weekend in 2023 as a guest performer, has played the Troubadour, with live dates to be announced.

“Michelle” is Melton’s debut musical release, with more to come from this intuitive, vulnerable and talented rising indie star.

Tish will be performing at Brandi Carlile’s 5th Girls Just Wanna Weekend on January 18-21, 2024.
