Fall 2012 Tour Launches This Thursday, October 18, In Detroit
And Includes Sold-Out Show At NYC’s Beacon Theatre On October 26
Trey Anastasio will celebrate the release of his ninth solo album, Traveler – out today via Rubber Jungle Records / ATO Records – with a fall tour that kicks off this Thursday, October 18, at The Fillmore in Detroit, MI. The run will include sold-out shows at the Chicago Theatre in Chicago (10/19), New York City’s Beacon Theatre (10/26), Boston’s Orpheum Theatre (10/27) and the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY (10/28).
Co-produced by Anastasio and Peter Katis (The National, Interpol, Jónsi), Traveler features Trey Anastasio Band (TAB) and such guests as Mates of State’s Kori Gardner, The National’s Bryan Devendorf and Matt Berninger, Icelandic percussionist Samuli Kosminen, Rob Moose (Bon Iver, Antony and the Johnsons), Thomas Bartlett (Rufus Wainwright, David Byrne) and theremin virtuoso Rob Schwimmer.
Fans can see Anastasio and many of these artists at work in Katis’ Tarquin Studios in the new video “Land of Nod,” which was shot with Trey’s iPhone. It can be viewed at http://youtu.be/ksV8YKnwW8Y.
“I really enjoy the give and take, the push and pull, the team work,” says Trey. “It’s one of the things I’ve always liked about Phish – the unified work together toward a goal. It’s so deeply satisfying. I felt that way as I made Traveler, working with Peter, TAB and all these new musicians, like we were sculpting something.”
“The record opens with the shimmering, love-versus-the-apocalypse ode ‘Corona’ and goes on to find Anastasio incorporating funky, fat horns and whirring synths on ‘Land of Nod’ and Zappa-esque orchestral meanderings that turn pure pop on ‘Scabbard,’” said Rolling Stone, which premiered the album a week in advance of its release. “Traveler even includes a zonked-out, soul-tinged cover of the Gorillaz track ‘Clint Eastwood.’”
Consequence of Sound hailed the album’s first single, “Let Me Lie” as “a multi-layered giant of strings, xylophone, and gorgeous harmonies” and praised TAB member Jennifer Hartswick’s “brassy, sumptuous take” on the verses of “Clint Eastwood,” going on to note: “Anastasio handles the breezy chorus and swanky guitar stabs, and the whole thing struts with smoky bravado.”
Anastasio will be joined on tour by longtime Trey Anastasio Band members Natalie Cressman, Jennifer Hartswick, Russ Lawton, Tony Markellis and Ray Paczkowski plus renowned Brazilian percussionist Cyro Baptista (Paul Simon, Herbie Hancock), marking his first TAB tour since 2006, and James Casey (Lettuce) on tenor saxophone. See below for itinerary or visit www.trey.com for further details.
The Hollywood Reporter hailed Anastasio as “a musical superhero” in a review of his performance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic earlier this year, which was part of Trey’s coast-to-coast orchestral tour. He has received GRAMMY® nominations for both his recordings with Phish and his solo work. Together with Amanda Green (Bring It On: The Musical, High Fidelity), Anastasio wrote the music for Hands On A Hardbody, a new musical by Pulitzer Prize winner Doug Wright that premiered at La Jolla Playhouse in La Jolla, CA and will open on Broadway in the 2012-13 season. He has also collaborated with such artists as Dave Matthews, Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, Toots and the Maytals, B.B. King and The Roots, and – as part of the trio Oysterhead – Les Claypool (Primus) and Stewart Copeland (The Police).
