Early Praise for The Weakness

“The album’s dozen songs, propelled by his Americana and pop-punk tastes, thread the tension between downbeat and shimmery” – New York Times

“The Weakness, Kelly’s third full-length album, is an emotionally daring statement from the 34-year-old singer-songwriter” – Rolling Stone

“Ruston Kelly created an album that turns his own experiences and the layers of his own existence into a universal message laced with hope.” – No Depression

“The resulting album is expansive and his most intricate, with arrangements veering more closely to indie and arena rock than his earlier Americana-adjacent work.” – Nashville Scene

“clever sonic flourishes and just the right amount of rock bite” – The Tennessean

Ruston Kelly’s highly anticipated third album, The Weakness, is out today on Rounder Records. The blisteringly honest and profoundly hopeful collection of songs reveals Kelly’s vast ability to create strength and beauty from the most painful of experiences. He also shares the brilliant new single “Breakdown,” and is set to embark on his national The Weakness Tour. See tour dates below and hear The Weakness and “Breakdown,” available here.

The Weakness’ twelve tracks delve into Kelly’s experience tackling loss and personal growth, and emerged as he began to process the number of life-altering changes he experienced the previous year. Working with producer / songwriter / multi-instrumentalist Nate Mercereau (Sharon Van Etten, Leon Bridges, Maggie Rogers), The Weakness is a bold departure from the elegant simplicity of his first two albums. The resulting body of work matches its kaleidoscopic sound with some of Kelly’s most illuminating material to date. “The album’s dozen songs, propelled by his Americana and pop-punk tastes, thread the tension between downbeat and shimmery,” writesThe New York Times.

“With every record I make, I learn so much about myself and who I am as a human and what type of man I want to be,” says Kelly. “In a way it’s a form of self-help, or like I’m building a fort against a lesser version of myself. Then the goal from there is to just keep on growing.” Watch Kelly perform the album’s title track on Late Night With Seth Meyers: https://youtu.be/scsAxZEhH5A.

“Breakdown,” his latest single, is an incandescent piece of alt-pop graced with crystalline beats and Kelly’s achingly delicate vocal work. “I wrote that at a time when there was a lot going on with my family and I was trying to be there for them, but I felt stretched so thin,” he says. “The song came from me admitting I’m not superhuman, and somehow just saying that out loud made me feel more capable of handling the pressure.”

Kelly kicks off The Weakness Tour on April 12th at Louisville’s Mercury Ballroom and will find him playing NYC’s Webster Hall (April 21st), Chicago’s House of Blues (April 29th), Los Angeles’s The Fonda Theater (May 14th), and will end with a special hometown show at Nashville’s Ascend Amphitheater (June 2nd) with Jenny Lewis opening.
